Green and Clean Fire Engine Showcased at Hermosa Beach
March 3, 2011- Los Angeles, CA Green Technologies are a constant priority at the City of Hermosa Beach where new options are always being explored. In that spirit, the Hermosa Beach Fire Department will receive an exclusive preview of the world's first compressed natural gas (CNG) fueled fire engine. HME Incorporated, the company that manufactures the trucks, calls it the "nation's first green & clean emergency response vehicle." From the company's website: "According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, there are sufficient reserves to meet expected demand of natural gas needs. In January 1, 2009 the US had approx 238 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proved, dry natural gas reserves with new reserves being uncovered each year on US soil. Natural gas is a cleaner burning fuel, raising emission standards for less pollutants and the use of an environmentally friendly fuel." Hermosa Beach EPAC Commissioner, Ken Hartley arranged the preview of this special fire truck after seeing it on display at the Firehouse World Expo in San Diego, California. He reports, "The Company claims 90% fewer emissions, 40% lower consumable costs, lower maintenance costs, and a far quieter engine than the Diesel versions. They also claim that Federal grant money would be able to cover 80 to 90% of the truck cost. As a member of the Emergency Preparedness Advisory Commission and resident of Hermosa Beach, I'm always looking for "win-win" scenarios. If it fits the needs of the fire department, saves our City money and is better for our environment, I feel it's worthwhile to look at these options." HME, Incorporated manufactures custom stainless steel fire apparatus and custom built chassis based in Wyoming, Michigan.
