Hermosa Beach, California

Firefighters and community members recently participated in a poker tournament hosted by the Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association. The winner received a seat at the World Series of Poker, WSOP, which is valued at $10,000. The tournament started with 100 players that consisted of both amateurs and experienced players.

"Our number one purpose and goal was to network with the community members and community groups," says Brian Grebbien, President of the Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association. The firefighters held the tournament to  raise money for various causes in their community. The Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association gives money to several charities, including their city's Little League, the Burn Foundation, and scholarships to local high schools.

The tournament could not have been possible without the generous funding from Michael Binder, a Hermosa Beach resident and owner of Altitude Aviation, who has been an avid support of the Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association and its charitable work.  Binder gave the Association the money they needed to purchase the World Series of Poker seat.  Binders says of his work with the firefighters, "My business is in Hermosa Beach, and my offices are in Hermosa Beach.  So as I see the firetrucks going up and down the street, it just seems like the right thing to get involved with."

The second part of the night was Casino Night. A silent auction was also held to help raise money, and winnings from the casino tables were exchanged for raffle tickets.

The Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association raised $32,000 from the poker tournament and Casino Night.  The winner of the tournament was Ed Johnson, and he will be going to Las Vegas to participate in the World Series of Poker.
