IAFF Members Affected By Alabama Tornado
January 2012 IAFF 14th District Vice President Danny Todd and Professional Fire Fighters Association of Alabama (PFFAA) President Steve Pegues are reaching out to members in the aftermath of an Alabama tornado. No serious member injuries have been reported, but six fire fighter homes, including that of Birmingham Local 117 President Don Baker, were damaged. "Most of our members already know about the IAFF Charitable Foundation and the IAFF Disaster Fund," says District Vice President Todd. "However, it is still important to remind them that this is available when the worst happens." In addition to financial relief, Todd says that other membership needs are also being assessed and will be addressed as soon as possible. The tornado tore through seven Alabama counties on January 23, 2012, killing two citizens and destroying at least 211 homes. The majority of the damage is being reported in Jefferson (where Birmingham is located) and Chilton counties. Alabama's governor, Robert Bentley, declared a state of emergency for the entire state. He said the declaration authorizes the Alabama Emergency Management Agency and other state agencies to assist communities and make assessments of damage.
