Nine firefighters were injured Tuesday night while battling a three-alarm fire in an abandoned house in Irvington, New Jersey, according to the Star-Ledger.

Deputy Fire Chief Brian Muehe told the Associated Press, firefighters from five department responded to the fire. Departments included Irvington, Maplewood and East Orange.

A Maplewood firefighter suffered burns and was taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. Another firefighter was taken to University Hospital in Newark with a back injury and two others went to Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark with undisclosed injuries, Muehe said. Their conditions were not available.

Five other firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion at the scene, according to the newspaper.

The fire in the 2 1/2 story house located in the 1000 block of Grove Street broke out around 6 p.m. with flames shooting through the roof and smoke billowing into the sky, according to WABC-TV.

The fire in the house was so intense the roof and walls collapsed. The house burned to the ground and damaged two neighboring homes. Eleven people were left homeless by the fire, according to Channel 7.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
