A James City County firefighter was killed Sunday night in a motorcycle accident. Just before 10:30 p.m., Chris Karban, 27, reportedly lost control of his motorcycle on Route 199 and ran off the road, James City Police Maj Stephen Rubino told the Virginia Gazette.

According to Rubino, the motorcycle struck a guardrail and Karban, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say speed may have been a factor in the crash, their investigation is continuing.

Karban joined the James City Co. Fire Department in October 2005. He served on the department's Recruitment and Retention team. He also was the department's internal webmaster and served as the department's official photographer, according to the paper.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
