The History and Mission of the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund

The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund was started in 2002 by the family of Terry Farrell who was both a member of FDNY Rescue 4 and the Fire Chief of the Dix Hills Volunteer Fire Department and perished at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.  Through public and corporate donations, the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund has been able to provide families of fallen firefighters across America with educational scholarships and money for medical needs.  The organization also uses the money they raise to provide underfunded fire departments with the fire apparatus and equipment that they need.  Every dollar raised goes directly to a needy fire department or fire service family.

Jim Beam and the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund

In 2005, Jim Beam, the nation's premier bourbon distiller, partnered with the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund to raise money and awareness for the organization through the release of Limited Edition Terry Farrell bottles of Jim Beam Bourbon, and through 2008 they had donated approximately $250,000 to the Terry Fund.  In 2009, they have donated another $100,000 through the sale of the specially labeled bottles which were available throughout the summer.

Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund Firehouse Cookbook

The latest fundraising effort between Jim Beam and the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund is a firefighter cookbook titled, "The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund California Firehouse Cookbook and What Inspires Our Local Heroes".  For several months, the organization collected recipes from firefighters in California and across the nation, and the book was released on September.  The book was released with much acclaim on September 2, 2009 at the All American Grill in Mission Valley, California.

On hand were several of the cookbook's contributing chefs, including FDNY Firefighter Keith Young, who travel from Queens to California for the launch party.  Young contributed five recipes to the book including his favorite, Jim Beam and Cola Barbecued Pork Ribs, with a sauce that consists of Jim Beam Bourbon, Coca Cola, Honey Sauce, and various other delicious ingredients.

Young has a personal connection to Terry Farrell, as he met and came to know Terry before the World Trade Center attacks.  He first met him when Terry visited his fire station to ask the firefighters to donate blood and to be tested to become bone marrow donors. Young explains, "Terry implored us to get our blood tested to see if we could be bone marrow donors for recipients, people that were sick with cancer, people that had leukemia and stuff like that.  And I remember being a Probationary Firefighter and really looking up to him and saying how cool it was.  And I always saw Terry like every once in awhile because he was on Rescue 4.  He was at very involved fires where Rescue 4 was involved.  He was just a really good guy, and he's sorely missed on the job."

Who Benefits From the Cookbook

According to Sheri Haupt of Beam Global Spirits and Wine, "100% of the proceeds from this book go directly to California firefighters and their families."  One family that the book will will help is that of Rialto firefighter Keith Coffey, who was recently involved in an off-duty motorcycle accident. Ironically, Coffey had contributed a recipe, "Keith's Mexican Cornbread and Doubt Cake" to the cookbook.  On September 4th, Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund of California's Board of Directors Mike O'Connor and Jim Colston, were honored to meet with Coffey and his family to present them with a donation to help with his medical expenses.
