The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund

Founded by the family of FDNY Rescue 4 Firefighter Terry Farrell, who perished on September 11, 2001, the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund has been helping the families of fallen firefighters and underfunded fire departments across the United States since 2002.  The charitable organization donates all of the funds it raises through various events, fundraisers,  and private and corporate donations to firefighter families who are in need of educational and medical assistance and to fire departments in desperate need of fire apparatus and equipment.

Jim Beam's Support of the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund

The largest corporate sponsor of the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund is Jim Beam, distillers of America's best selling bourbon.  In 2005, Jim Beam joined forces with the charity, and through 2008 they had donated approximately $250,000 to the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund through the sale of specially labeled bottles of bourbon.  In 2009, they added to this by donating another $100,000 from the sale of their bottles to the Terry Fund.

Jim Beam Terry Farrell Fund Firehouse Cookbook

Always seeking creative means of raising awareness for the fire service charity, Jim Beam and the California Chapter of the Terry Farrell Fund partnered to develop "The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund California Firehouse Cookbook and What Inspires Our Local Heroes".  Slated for a September 2009 release, the special cookbook contains fifty recipes submitted by firehouses across the state of California, and will be sold to raise funds for and awareness about the charity.

Sheri Haupt of Beam Global Spirits and Wine explains her company's involvement in this project saying, "We are trying to come up with creative ways to help our local heroes, to help these firefighters raise money and we thought this was a great opportunity, again getting their other skills out there other than just firefighting, and getting the communities involved, and having some fun with it."

Demonstrating the preparation of "Pollo Asado Taco Salad", one of the recipes that will appear in the cookbook, Mike O'Connor of the Escondido Fire Department explains that cooking is an important part of firehouse life in California and across the United States.  In his fire department he says, "The crew gets going.  We assign someone to cook or they volunteer.  Usually the youngest guy volunteers or the older guy will volunteer with him and teach him some of the recipes that have been long in the firehouse."

How to Submit Recipes and Obtain a Copy of the Cookbook

Jim Beam and the California Chapter of the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund are currently accepting submissions for next year's edition of the firehouse cookbook.  To obtain a recipe form and more information on how to submit your firehouse recipe, send a request to Mike O'Connor at FiremanMic@aol.com.
