Juvenile Charged for Setting School Blaze

On Thursday, March 3, 2011 approximately 10:30am 7 fire units, 23 fire fighters responded to a report of a fire at Montwood High School, 12000 block of Montwood, Socorro Independent School District. Fire crews found a fire in a restroom, which had been extinguished by the automatic fire sprinkler system. The fire caused $5,000 dollars in damage. A school officer was injured when attempting to extinguish the fire, unknown the extent of the injuries. 

El Paso Fire Department Fire Investigators conducted an investigation determined the fire was intentionally set. Fire investigators arrested a 15 year old Juvenile and charge him with felony arson of the first degree. The juvenile was arrested and turned over to the Juvenile Detention Center.

Arson at a school is a second degree felony and if an individual is injured in the fire the charge becomes first degree felony arson, punishable by 10,000 dollar fine and 5 to 99 years state prison time.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
