Juvenile Playing with BBQ Lighter Causes Salem, Oregon Blaze

Salem Fire Fighters responded to a one-story residential structure fire located at 2500 Block of Carleton Way NE, Salem, Oregon 97301 on June 28, 2011 at approximately 9:52 AM.

A Rural Metro medic unit who was responding to a medical call in the area reported the smoke and fire. The first arriving fire fighters discovered heavy flames coming from the rear of the structure. The occupants who were home at the time discovered the fire and were able to safety escape from the structure.

No injuries were reported to the occupants or fire fighters.

Approximately 30 Fire fighters from the Salem Fire Department & Chemeketa Community College Fire Program were on the scene. The fire damage is estimated at $100,000 to Structure, Vehicle and Contents.

The fire started on an exterior cover patio area and spread to the structure. The fire was caused by a juvenile playing with a BBQ lighter igniting items on the patio.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
