Kern County Firefighters Respond to Bakersfield Grass Fire
EAST BAKERSFIELD, California

June 14, 2010

Today at approximately 10:01 A.M., the Kern County Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the 6200 block of Sugarloaf Lane in East Bakersfield. Approximately 28 firefighters fought the blaze which was quickly spreading and threatening structures.

Upon arrival crews were faced with a developing fire in large property of approximately two acres which was threatening two homes and several out buildings. Firefighters immediately set to work to protect the homes. One elderly female who was in one of the homes was escorted to safety by firefighters. Several animals were also led to safety. Fire crews did a great job of containing the fire to the grass and out buildings. Crews remained on scene to ensure the fire is completely extinguished.

No structures were damaged by the fire, and firefighters saved approximately $250,000.00 to the residence. However, some out buildings and garden furniture suffered varying degrees of damage at an estimated $4,000.00. There are no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Kern County Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to remind residents of the importance of hazard reduction and weed abatement. If you notice a hazard please call your local fire station or 661-391-7136.
