Kernville Firefighters Jump on Brisk Weather Fire
Firefighters responded to a wildland fire in Wofford Heights, located along the west side of Old State Road, between the road and Live Oak Campground. On Tuesday, October 26th, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the "Wofford" fire was reported. Firefighting handcrews, engines, a helicopter, prevention patrols, fire investigators and overhead from the Forest Service and Kern County Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Once on scene, the firefighters were met with tall grass and high winds – a combination very familiar to many areas around the Kern River Valley. And, not unlike many areas, could have been a threat to nearby homes and campgrounds. The Forest Service and Kern County fire personnel quickly contained the fire and held it to 2/10th of an acre. Incident Commander Robert Troller and Incident Commander trainee, Robert Nevarez, running the fire operation against some strong winds, stated, "The fire is surrounded by roads, that really helped us get a handle on it, otherwise it could have taken off with these high winds," Fire investigator, George Bowen, Patrol 48 with the Forest Service advised the fire is under investigation. The interagency response today was another example of the great partnership the wildland firefighting agencies share in the Kern River Valley. Residents are reminded to maintain their hazard reduction work around their homes throughout the year. For further information please call the Lake Isabella Visitor Center at (760) 379-5646.
