On December 20, 2011, the Board of Supervisors formally accepted $64,000 in federal grant funding from the California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) that will go towards our Department's emergency training and planning for the unique challenges related to transportation and hazardous materials incidents.

Part of the funds will go towards designing and implementing an eight-hour Highway and Rail Awareness Program. This program will ensure our first responders are provided the necessary skills to enhance situational awareness, improve incident scene safety and increase their proficiencies when responding to highway and/or rail hazardous materials transportation emergency incidents.

Our Department anticipates providing an eight-hour training module on this program to all battalion chiefs and hazardous materials task force personnel next year, with all other emergency response personnel receiving training within the following two years. In addition, the grant monies will also fund the distribution and annual review of our Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Plan.

This plan provides emergency response guidelines and protocols for our personnel to effectively prepare and respond to hazardous materials incidents including transportation accidents, fixed-facility releases and any other hazardous materials emergency that occurs.

Thanks to this CalEMA grant, our Department can continue to maintain the highest level of safety and security standards for the resident of Los Angeles County!
