Los Angeles County CERT Members Complete Ready! Set! Go! Training
The unincorporated area of Val Verde near the Del Valle Training Center and Los Angeles County Fire Department Fire Station 76 has experienced their fair share of disasters. As numerous wildland fires and floods have moved through their community, residents are taking emergency preparedness very seriously. Last week, students proudly accepted their CERT training completion certificates from Fire Fighter Specialist Steve Harper of Los Angeles County Fire Station132. Harper says he really enjoys teaching the program; he sees firsthand how the students walk away more prepared, able to respond to emergencies, and take care of their families and neighborhoods. In conjunction with the Val Verde Civic Association, the community has formed an Emergency Preparedness Committee made up of CERT-trained individuals. They have recently been awarded a lucrative grant that they are using to purchase equipment, prepare their community, and to continue stocking a storage bin with emergency supplies. Division III Assistant Chief Bill Niccum says, "We are always happy to see our communities come together and benefit from the expertise of firefighters. Along with the CERT program, we are also encouraging our residents to invite the firefighters to walk their properties and learn how to prepare their family and home from the threat of wildfire."
