The Los Angeles County Fire Department Air Operations Section, a leader in the use of helicopters in the fire service, will be installing Becker Avionics Digital Voice Communications Systems  to completing their fleet audio/intercom system retrofit program. The Digital Audio and Intercom System (DVCS6100) will be installed in their three Sikorsky S-70 Firehawks and six Bell Helicopter B412 aircraft over the next several months, according to Becker Avionics.

"The Los Angeles County Fire Department Air Operations Section relies on the Becker DVCS 6100 system to provide the flexibility the department's helicopter crews require to conduct their firefighting, EMS, search and rescue, and swiftwater/ocean rescue missions both day and night," said Brett Gardner, Becker Avionics director of sales and marketing.

"An important attribute of our Digital Audio System is the ability to handle multiple radios with a pilot and crew member driven, man-machine interface. This increases safety and mission effectiveness. Critical weight is saved with the digital system versus legacy and analog systems. This is a definite plus in the high performance world of these types of operations. Cleaner audio input can leave the crew more attentive and focused at the end of a long mission when performance can make the difference between a non-event and a much more serious outcome," Gardner said.

The DVCS6100 system components are the Remote Electronic Unit (REU) 6100, the Audio Control Unit (ACU) 6100, and the Intercom Amplifier IS3100. The DVCS6100 offers up to 8 communications transmit and up to 8 receiver channels, an integrated warning tone generator for up to eight different signals, an amplifier for two cockpit speakers, interfaces to two Cockpit Voice Recorders and a Public Address Amplifier. One remote module can operate up to six Audio Control Units, according to Becker.
