Los Angeles County Fire Department Hosts British Visitors

Last week, the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) welcomed 26 representatives from Lloyd's of London. They were part of the Under 35s Reinsurance Group, which  consists of young insurance practitioners in the reinsurance market. The group visited five cities in the United States to learn about catastrophic risks faced by American cities. They learned about earthquake, hurricane, tornado and wildfire hot spots, visiting New York, Boston, Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles, according to LACoFD.

The Under 35s Reinsurance Group was formed in 1972 and has been conducting worldwide educational tours since 1975 to obtain firsthand knowledge about catastrophic insurance exposures. U.S. insurers purchase reinsurance policies from Lloyds' syndicates to reduce their exposure to potential catastrophes. This helps insurers with policy pricing and reduces costs for policyholders, said Anneliese Hart, president of California Fair Plan Association.

The visitors attended a morning symposium featuring presentations from the Department of Insurance, FAIR Plan and the LACoFD. They then headed to Fire Station 70 in Malibu, California with Forestry Chief John Todd to listen to first hand experience from firefighters battling wildfires and performing property inspections for brush clearance requirements.

At the station, the group was presented a scroll, as a reminder of their visit, by L.A. County Board of Supervisors Third District Field Deputy Susan Nissman.

The group was then taken to nearby Fire Camp 8 to discuss fire suppression tactics using water-dropping helicopters. There was also a presentation from representatives of a local Fire Safe Council on wildfire loss abatement measures.
