Los Angeles Fire Station 154 Crews Replace Stolen “Rig”
Fire Station 154 personnel worked alongside the Covina Police Department to present a new bicycle to local resident Scott Becerril during the holiday season. Becerril always wanted to be a firefighter but a medical condition left him with limited physical and mental skills. Still determined, he would ride his customized bicycle equipped with lights and a portable radio-scanner, which he calls his "rig," to local incidents and events. Becerril's rig was stolen just before the holidays while it was parked outside a local electronics store. Covina firefighters and police officers replaced it with a new one, much to the delight of Becerril, who visited Fire Station 154 on his new rig again on January 6 to express his gratitude. "It was a total surprise to get this new rig," he says. Becerril has plans to equip it with a headlight, water bottle holder and a public address system that he says will simulate ambulance, police and fire sirens. Becerril safely stores his rig at his parents' house when not in use and says he refrains from riding it during the rain for safety concerns. He uses a plain soap and water mixture to help keep it clean, and travels to a Covina Valley bike shop every week to keep his new rig fine-tuned. Becerril is no stranger to lifesaving procedures. He received merit badges for first-aid and fire safety when we was a Boy Scout and was even promoted to an Eagle Scout with Covina Boy Scout Troop 448 in 1984.
