Firefighters recently battled for first place at the 5th Annual Los Angeles Firemen's Credit Union Chili Cook Off. Every team had a secret recipe, and ingredients ranged from turkey to steak, and one included elk.  This annual event was held to raise money for and awareness of a fire service charity, the Fire Family Foundation.

The Fire Family Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps firefighter families in the event of a death, injury, or illness. The event provided funding from the silent auction, raffle, and booth fees. The Fire Family Foundation also helps fire departments with money for equipment and education.

"We also have a component of the foundation that helps victims of fires as well. We offer financial aid. We offer resources. We help them put their lives back together again in any way hat we possibly can," says President and CEO of L.A. Firemen's Credit Union, Mike Mastro. Some of the funds went to a Station Fire victim, who was also a retired Pasadena firefighter. The Foundation was able to replace his dress uniform that was lost in the fire.

The judging of the chili was done by members of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School. They judged the chilis on aroma, color, consistency, and flavor. LAFD Recruitment took home 1st Place, Compton Fire Department was awarded 2nd Place, and LAFD Station 89 took 3rd. The Firefighter's Choice Award went to LAFD Station 58. Their chili will be featured on a menu by Engine Co. No. 28, a popular restaurant in Downtown Los Angeles.

In addition to the chili sampling, the event was filled with fun and entertainment for attendees. Kids were able to enjoy a slide, rock wall, games, and puppet show. Everyone enjoyed live music, bingo, a raffle, lunch that was provided by Carl's Jr., and the opportunity to take a picture with the California State Firefighter's Association Steamer Engine.
