Memphis Female Receives Mental Evaluation After Setting Boarding House Blaze
The Memphis Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 1669 Shadowlawn Blvd, Monday, October 3, 2011 at 8:30 p.m. Upon arrival on the scene at 8:35 p.m., firefighters reported fire visible from the one story wood-frame residential boarding house. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately. Fifteen (15) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately thirty-one (31) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Division Chief J. Pillsbury was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 8:47 p.m. and reported knocked down at 8:52 p.m. One (1) firefighter was transported in stable condition to the Regional Medical Center's Burn Unit with 2nd degree burns to his ears. He was treated and later released. There were no civilian injuries. It has been determined that the residence did have a working smoke detector. The structure sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $35,000 structure and $5,000 contents. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be intentionally set in the bedroom area. A sixty-four (64) year old female, was detained and emergency committed at the Regional Medical Center for mental evaluation. Anyone with information regarding arson related crimes are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH (2274) or the State Arson Hotline at 1-800-762-3017. You could be eligible to receive a cash reward from Crime Stoppers of Memphis and Shelby County, Inc. The Memphis Fire Department urges all citizens to maintain a working smoke detector in their place of residence. Any City of Memphis resident can apply for a free smoke detector by contacting the Fire Museum of Memphis at (901) 320-5650. Always have a plan of escape in case there is a fire.
