February 2012

The Memphis Fire Department is pleased to announce that they have been awarded the 2012 Bob Thomas ALS Service of the Year Award by the Tennessee Ambulance Service Association.   This is a coveted award that recognizes the EMS system in Tennessee that best exemplifies outstanding professionalism and service to the community.

In giving the award, the Tennessee Ambulance Service Association noted the Memphis Fire Department’s markedly improved level of EMS care to the community over the last several years; a new in-house training program that teaches firefighters to become paramedics; a sophisticated program that recognizes life-threatening heart attacks in the field and routes the patient to the proper hospital where the artery in the heart is opened within 90 minutes; a hypothermia treatment for cardiac arrest victims; a top-notch quality improvement program; plus more.

“I could not be more proud of our EMS staff that manage the EMS operation and the firefighters who respond on medical emergencies everyday. It is their commitment to excellence and dedication to the people of Memphis that have made this recognition possible,” said Alvin Benson, Director of the Fire Division.
