Memphis Firefighters Attack Apartment Blaze
The Memphis Fire Department responded to an alarm of fire at 1024 Wellington Street, Wednesday, March 09, 2011 at 12:59 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene at 1:03 a.m., firefighters reported fire visible from the two story wood-frame apartments. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately. Nineteen (19) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately fifty-six (56) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Battalion Chief T. Norris was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 1:14 a.m. and reported knocked down at 1:30 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. It has not been determined if the residence had a working smoke detector. Four (4) units sustained smoke, fire and/or water damage. Total damage estimates are unknown. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be intentionally set in the rear bedroom. This fire remains under investigation. The American Red Cross provided assistance for five (5) families. The Memphis Fire Department urges all citizens to maintain a working smoke detector in their place of residence. Any City of Memphis resident can apply for a free smoke detector by contacting the Fire Museum of Memphis at (901) 320-5650. Always have a plan of escape in case there is a fire.
