MIT graduate to help expand wildfire safety nationwide

August 27, 2010

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has named Molly Mowery associate project manager of its Firewise program. Mowery will assist NFPA in engaging state and local governments and residents about Firewise programs and wildfire safety issues.

"Molly joins us at a critical juncture as NFPA develops our long-range strategic planning for wildfire damage prevention," said Dave Nuss, NFPA's wildland fire operations division manager. "Her background in national land use planning and international project management will be a valuable addition to our efforts to further urge policymakers and city planners to address wildfire safety concerns."

NFPA's Firewise program includes more than 500 member communities across the United States. These are large and small communities, neighbors and local forestry officials who continue their efforts to reduce local wildfire vulnerability and prevent loss of lives, property and resources from wildfire.

"As we continue to see increased wildfire activity across the country, Firewise is playing an important role to help communities address their risk for wildfire damage," said Mowery. "I'm looking forward to contributing to NFPA's expansion of the Firewise program and working with our communities, partner agencies and organizations to help reduce their wildfire vulnerability."

Mowery completed a master's degree in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and focused her thesis on wildfire and planning in the Front Range region of Colorado.
