Monastery Wildfire in Goldendale 20% contained

Fire crews from multiple local agencies responded to assist in the more than 4,000 acre \"Monastery\" wildfire located 7 miles northeast of Goldendale Washington. Firefighters and equipment from all over the state are battling the blaze including crews from Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue, Woodland Fire, Castle Rock Fire, Cathlament, and Wahkiakum county. Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Dave LaFave is the commander of the incident. Governor Gregoire and Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste have recently visited the fire and it\'s development.

The fire spread estimate is now at 4,200 acres, down from 5,300 acres, after GPS flight tracking as of late yesterday morning. Sixty-four total structures have been lost, determined by GPS flight, yesterday morning. Nine of those have been confirmed as residences Thursday, however there was difficulty in determining from the air which were outbuildings, and which were residences. Twenty percent containment as of noon Wednesday. Some of the displaced residents are at the Red Cross evacuation center located at the Klickitat Co. Fairgrounds. Horses and pets of displaced residents are also being given shelter.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
