The New York City Fire Museum is the home of the largest indoor memorial for the 343 FDNY firefighters who perished on September 11, 2001.  Although eight years have passed since the most painful day in FDNY and New York City history, the memory of it remains fresh in the minds of New Yorkers.  With their large 9/11 display, the New York City Fire Museum has made it their mission to make sure that those first responders are actively honored and remembered.

Judy Jamison, Director of the New York Fire Museum explains, "We are actually the only complete memorial to the 343 firefighters that died that day.  The memorial was completed in 2002, and it still serves as you may have noted from a lot of the Mass cards and the flowers in there.  These are things that people bring in, and the book in there is almost kind of a shrine.  The comments that we get are heartwarming."

The center of the moving display is a large wall with 343 tiles engraved with the photographs and names of those who died that day.  It also includes artifacts from Ground Zero and video images of the aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center.

According to Judy Jamison, one of the museum's Board Members was in one of the towers, trapped in an office above the impact floor.  He did not think he would get out alive, but was miraculously rescued by FDNY firefighters.  After surviving the disaster, he approached the museum and asked to serve on their board in order to honor the firefighters who saved him.

Jamison says that the New York City Fire Museum will always have a home for the memories of those lost that day and will always be a place where visitors can come to pay their respects to these heroes.
