North Las Vegas Fire Chief Sworn in as IAFC First Vice President
North Las Vegas Fire Chief Al H. Gillespie was sworn in as the First Vice President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) on August 28, 2010, in Chicago, IL. The position is progressive and next year he will be the president of this association. Last year, he served as the second vice president after being selected in an international election by his peers for the prestigious position. Chief Gillespie is a proven international leader, seen as both innovative and dynamic.

Chief Gillespie has served as the treasurer and vice chair for the Safety, Health and Survival Section of the IAFC, and participated in the association's membership task force. He has served as a board member of the National Society of Executive Fire Officers and as the secretary/treasurer of that organization. He is on the NFPA Technical Committee for Fire Service Occupational Safety and Health as an alternate. Chief Gillespie has a strong labor/management background and has been a leader in developing working relationships based on teamwork between labor groups, including the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and management. He has served as the chairman of the Washington State Fire Chief's Labor Relations Committee.

Chief Gillespie's education and qualifications include a fellowship at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, a bachelor's of science in fire administration, two associate's degrees, a management certificate and a certificate of completion of the Executive Fire Officer Program from the National Fire Academy. He is a designated Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Chief Gillespie is in his 34th year in fire service and has served the City of North Las Vegas for more than 5 years.
