March 14, 2011

A 32-year-old male visitor was airlifted from Kalalau Valley at about 5:30 p.m. yesterday evening after sustaining a head injury. The Hauula resident had been hiking near the waterfall when a rock reportedly fell from the waterfall and hit his head.

A tour helicopter in the area responded to an SOS written in the sand on the beach and notified authorities.  Rescue 3 and Air-1 responded to the call.

The hiker was well enough to walk with rescuers to the landing zone where he was then airlifted to Princeville Airport.

Awaiting medics transported the man to Wilcox Hospital for medical treatment.
