Around 10:30 PM on Monday, July 25th, units of the Abilene Fire Department responded to the report of a house fire in the 800 block of Mesquite Street.  Firefighters were unable to contact anyone at the residence and forced the door to make entry.  Once inside, they discovered a smoldering mattress and box spring.

These were removed from the home and extinguished.  The sole occupant claimed she had not heard the firefighter's arrival.  She further explained that she had accidentally dropped a cigarette onto the bed and attempted to extinguish it with bottles of water.

Firefighters returned to service, only to be called back to the residence around 1:00 AM for a major house fire.  They arrived to find the home "fully involved" with fire and the occupant safely out of the residence.  As firefighters battled the blaze, which took almost an hour to bring under control, Fire Department investigators began looking into the cause.

Shortly before 3 AM, a Fire Department investigator placed the occupant under arrest for "arson of a habitation."  The subject was later booked into the Taylor County Jail.  The structure and its contents are considered a total loss, at around $60,000.
