A four-alarm fire overnight Saturday destroyed the former practice arena of the Oklahoma City Stars hockey team west of downtown.

Firefighters arrived about 11 p.m. Saturday at the old Star Arena, or Starena, at 815 N Virginia Ave. and saw towering flames coming out of the roof on the third floor, fire Battalion Chief Al Cothran said. The building could not be saved, so firefighters focused on protecting nearby structures.

Crews were on the scene of the fire for more than 12 hours tending to hotspots and soaking the smoldering rubble.

The building was being used for storage, mainly of furniture and mattresses, Cothran said.

The cause and origin of the fire were under investigation.

In a former incarnation, there were skaters but no ice when the building was known as Rocket Roller Rink, according to The Oklahoman archives. It closed when the Stars folded in 1983, but re-opened only to close again other times in the next several years.
