The Rooster Rock fire that began Monday morning six miles south of Sisters, Oregon is burning further into the Deschutes National Forest, according to InciWeb. The fire has expanded, growing to more than 5,500 acres with 30 percent containment.

Currently there are 712 personnel on scene that include 20 crews, six dozers and 25 watertenders. The fire is burning in timber, ponderosa pine, manzanita and grass. There are numerous spot fires burning together and direct attack with handtools is proving ineffective, according to InciWeb.

Fire officials said dozers worked on a fire line around the southern flank of the fire, according to KVAL-TV.

The aerial attack includes two heavy helicopters, a medium helicopter and three light helicopters, although smoke is limiting aircraft operations.

The growth potential of the fire remains high. There is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms Thursday with wind gusts expected up to 40 mph.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
