Orlando Fire Department to Transport Own Patients
Beginning today, February 1, 2011, the Orlando Fire Department will transport most patients themselves, rather than contracting with another company, Rural Metro, for ambulance service. Unless a patient has a minor injury, their ride to a local hospital will now be by a City of Orlando ambulance. For quite some time, a patient would be stabilized at a scene by Orlando firefighters, EMT's and/or paramedics, and then be transported to a hospital for further treatment by Rural Metro. It costs the City of Orlando approximately 2 million dollars to buy and stock ten new ambulances, however, this ambulance service is supposed to bring in up to 9 million dollars for the city each year.
