Four Peoria firefighters have been deployed, along with their heavy equipment, to help combat the Wallow Fire burning around Alpine, Ariz.

Two fire captains, an engineer and a firefighter have responded in a Peoria fire engine to protect homes and businesses threatened in the area. Peoria's 3,000-gallon water tender also has been deployed to shuttle water to firefighting teams on the front line. One Peoria fire captain is acting as a strike-team leader, providing oversight and direction.

Peoria has an intergovernmental agreement with the Arizona State Land Department to assist in combating wildland fires and is part of the Central Arizona Wildland Response Team (CAWRT), which comprises more than 25 fire agencies that pool their equipment and specially trained firefighters to battle wildland fires.

The Wallow Fire is the third largest in Arizona history, and crews are working 16-hour shifts to try and contain it. The four Peoria firefighters, along with three from Glendale, deployed for at least two weeks.
