Permits Required to Set Off Fireworks in Kauai
Kaua'i Fire Department (KFD) officials are reminding residents and visitors that a permit from the fire department is required to purchase and set off firecrackers on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The hours that firecrackers may be ignited are from 9 pm on Dec. 31 to 1 am on Jan.1, and may only be done on private property. Permits are available at KFD headquarters until Thursday, Dec. 30, from 8 am to 4 pm. The office is located in Līhu'e at 3083 Akahi St. on the bottom floor of the Hale Pumehana building. The cost of a fireworks permit is $25, and it can be used to purchase up to 5,000 non- aerial individual firecracker units. There is no limit on the number of permits an individual can obtain to buy firecrackers; however, permits will only be issued to those who are 18 years or older. Only licensed pyro-technicians with proper permits are authorized to ignite aerial fireworks. Although the following items are classified as fireworks, no permit is required to purchase them – paperless firecrackers, snakes, sparklers, fountains, cylindrical or cone fountains, whistles, toy smoke devices, wheels and ground spinners, and other similar products. For more information, please contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at 241-4982 or 241- 4980. Author:Kauai Fire Department Press Release
