Portland Fire & Rescue Battles Council Crest Residential Fire
Portland Firefighters were dispatched at 7:00 pm to reports of flames and smoke coming from the rear of a residence located at 3900 SW Hillsdale Avenue.  Firefighters from SW Portland's Station 15 arrived first onscene at 7:06 pm and determined that fire was coming from the rear of the structure and from under the eaves of this two-story home.

A primary search of the residence determined that there was no one inside at the time of the fire.  Firefighters battled flames on the exterior of the home, cut vent holes in the roof to control the fire in the attic, and extinguished flames in the home's kitchen.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 7:39 pm.  It is estimated that damage to the home is at least $50,000.  Portland Fire Investigators have determined that the fire was caused as a result of hot ashes from a fireplace that were placed in a 5-gallon plastic bucket too close to the home's siding.

Portland Fire & Rescue reminds citizens to dispose of ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid, and to place the container outside and away from the house or anything flammable while the ashes cool. Ashes from fires can be hot for several days even after being placed in a bucket, so please exercise caution when disposing of ashes.
