Portland Firefighters Show Support at Emergency Preparedness and Safety Event in Hubbard
September 21, 2010 In honor of National Preparedness Month, the City of Hubbard and the Hubbard Fire District hosted a family-friendly Emergency Preparedness and Safety Event last Saturday. At the event, citizens were provided with information to help learn how to best prepare their families, businesses, and communities for a potential disaster. The fair included a Life Flight helicopter landing, appearances by search and rescue teams, and a variety of activities for children and adults. Firefighters from Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) showed their support at the community event by showcasing PF&R's Heavy Rescue 18 and explaining the types of calls and activities that the apparatus would respond on. Heavy Rescue 18 is 38 feet long and 11 feet high, weighing 52,825 pounds. The apparatus is essentially a giant toolbox on wheels; they are primarily designed for technical rescue situations such as vehicle extrications following car accidents, confined space rescues, rope rescues, swift water rescues, or building collapses. Other representatives from a multitude of agencies were in attendance, including the Hubbard, Aurora, and Woodburn Fire Departments, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, State Bomb Team, Yamhill Search and Rescue, Life Flight, and Reach Air Ambulance to name a few. Each of these agencies is a part of the State-wide Emergency Management Team, a team committed to minimizing the impact of disasters on communities throughout Oregon.
