Post Fire Burns Near Lebec, California
More than 650 firefighters are on the ground trying to stop the Post Fire burning near Lebec, California. As of Tuesday night, the fire had burned approximately 1,300 acres and was 30 percent contained, according to a news release from the Kern County Fire Department (KCFD). Overnight, crews made steady progress on the fire but a possibility of triple digit temperatures could cause problems for firefighters as the day wears on. The Post Fire is under a unified command with KCFD, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) personnel. The fire began Tuesday afternoon at approximately 12:15 p.m. and quickly spread through steep terrain and heavy vegetation in the hot, windy conditions. According to KCFD, crews attacked the flames from the air, KCFD helicopter 408 was assisted by other aircraft including 10 Tanker Air Carrier, a converted DC-10 that is able 12,000 gallons of fire retardant in a constant flow. The fire threatened 40 to 50 homes during the afternoon and residents of that area were evacuated, according to KCFD. As of Tuesday evening, all evacuation orders had been lifted. Classes were canceled Wednesday at Frazier Park Elementary, El Tejon Middle School and Frazier Mountain High School. Kern County Fire Department also responded to the Town Fire that burned east of the Wind Wolves Preserve near Highway 166 north of Bakersfield, California.
