Ontario, California Battalion Chief Richard "Chip" Smith passed away Sunday following a courageous battle with cancer, according to Ontario Firefighters Local 1430 and the Ontario Fire Department. Smith, 46, started with the City of Ontario 19 years ago, moving up the ranks from Firefighter/Paramedic to Captain, Deputy Chief, and Battalion Chief. Before joining Ontario, Smith worked for the Indio Fire Department, Lake Arrowhead Fire Protection District, and the Rialto Fire Department. Smith also served on the executive board of Local 1430. Smith is survived by his wife Amanda, his daughters Colleen and Shannon, his brother Matt, sister Laura, and mother Virginia. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ontario Convention Center, 2000 E. Convention Center Way, Ontario, CA 91764.
