Sacramento Agencies Donate Fire Fighting Apparatus to Mexico

Two Sacramento fire agencies are combining efforts to donate retired vehicles and other apparatus to the town of Jalostitlán, Mexico. The donation is part of a long standing relationship between fire departments in the Sacramento region with Mexican counterparts. A formalized program of cooperation began in 1985 when Mexico suffered an 8.1 earthquake. Presently, the fire departments of Sacramento, Consumnes, Folsom, West Sacramento, and the Sacramento Metro Fire District participate in the international exchange program.

Sacramento Metro Fire is donating a fire engine and an ambulance. Additionally, rescue and firefighting apparatus is being donated by the Sacramento City Fire Department (SFD) such as the Hurst Tool, better known as the Jaws of Life, fire hose nozzles, tool boxes, and rakes.  On Monday, February 21, 2011 at 8:00, Firefighter Fernando Vallejo and Captain David Dolson, both of SFD, will donate their time to drive the vehicles to the Mexico-USA border where they will be met by Mexican officials.

The municipality of Jalostotitlán is located in the Los Altos region of the Mexican state of Jalisco, not far from Guadalajara. With a population of approximately 60,000, the town and surrounding villages are greatly in need of this type of fire and medical equipment.

In the past, the program has sponsored one-week training sessions for firefighters, bomberos, from all over Mexico. The bomberos are scheduled to return to Northern California for training in the summer of 2012.

Like there aren't any poor towns in the US that couldn't use this "retired" fire engine and ambulance and equipment?! I saw these vehicles on local TV and they look like new. Have these agencies asked us taxpayers if we would rather sell the vehicles to offset the Sacramento budget deficit or donate them to some poor California town, rather than just give our property to another country?! This is feel-good nonsense and needs to stop. ~ Sacramento taxpayer
