Sacramento Fire Sponsors 21st Annual Hazardous Material Workshop

This will be our 21st year in bringing to Sacramento the single largest and most popularly attended hazardous materials conference in the entire United States, The "Continuing Challenge". This hazardous materials conference is designed for fire department, law enforcement, and emergency medical responders.  Latest state-of-the-art training and classroom topics focus on issues of hazardous materials emergency response and accident intervention,  terrorism preparation, and Weapons of Mass Destruction.  It begins Tuesday, Sep 7th, and concludes Friday, Sept 10th.  Opening Ceremonies scheduled for Wednesday the 8th at 0800 am in the Grand Ballroom of the Radisson Hotel on highway 160 in North Sacramento.

Tuesday features seminar – type 8 hour classes all day.  Many of these classes allow the registrant to obtain "re-certification" in specific haz-mat and terrorism topics.

Wednesday starts off with the Opening Ceremonies with a dynamic presentation by Richard K. Brooks, III, Director of Emergency Services, Cecil County, Maryland.  Classroom 2 hour and 4 hour workshop type sessions beginning at 1:30 pm, and continue to 5:30 pm.  Beginning at 10:00 am Wednesday, we will be hosting over 90 vendors and exhibitors in the Radisson Courtyard featuring the latest in hazardous materials detection devices, protective clothing, unknown chemicals testing, computer support, terrorism planning computer programs, portable weather data collection devices, and more.  Wednesday is concluded with our famous outdoor bar-b-que dinner at 6:30 and an out-door "Name That Unknown" chemical testing contest.

Thursday and Friday consists of 2 hour and 4 hour workshops all day.

Overall, our registration will reach over 700 including over 100 instructors from across the USA presenting training sessions on rail tank car damage assessment, leak control and plugging, detection of weapons of mass destruction, radiological hands-on exercise, sampling techniques, chemical protective clothing, computer based technical data libraries, explosive device intervention, and more.

Co-hosted by the Sacramento City Fire Department, our sponsors include California Highway Patrol, Cal-EPA, Federal EPA, Cal-EMA, UC Davis Extension, U.S. Coast Guard, State Fire Marshal's Office, Cal-Office of Homeland Security, and many others.

The HAMMER (Hazardous Material Management and Emergency Response) Training and Education Center in Richland, Washington is well known for training emergency responders in new technologies. Recently, HAMMER personnel took that training on the road for the first time, to teach several classes to firefighters about hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen used in industry.
