Carlsbad, California SkinAgain, a leader in healing skin care products, recently held a gala to benefit the Burn Institute of San Diego. A night of dinner, music, raffles and casino games raised enough money to send eight children with burn injuries to the Burn Institute's Camp Beyond the Scars. The Burn Institute is a health agency with a mission to both educate the public to prevent burn injuries and to help children and adults who are burn victims to work through the physical and psychological effects of their injuries. Their annual Camp Beyond the Scars is one aspect of their efforts to help juvenile burn victims. The Burn Institute's Executive Director, James Floros, explains, "The camp is more about the psychosocial, the emotional aspect of the burn injury, so we do a lot of special support groups, giving the kids kind of a toolbox: what to do if you are being berated or harassed by a classmate or stared at in a grocery store. So it is really about helping these kids overcome that psychological trauma. A lot of times that psychological trauma is actually more severe than the burn injury itself." Each summer approximately eighty children attend the camp, and in 2009, SkinAgain became involved with the Burn Institute, donating their patented skin treatment pRo-tone to all eighty campers in attendance, according to Theresa DeMarco, SkinAgain's Product Manager. After learning more about what the Burn Institute's mission was, the company decided they wanted to get involved. Sherrie Berry, SkinAgain's Developer explains, "We decided, this is it. We have to do this for these kids, and we also want to get our cream out there because it really does help the burns." In addition to providing their cream to all of the campers, DeMarco and Berry also hosted the recent gala to raise money for the Burn Institute. Hundreds of donors enjoyed a live band, DJ, dinner, casino games, and silent auction and raffle, and according to Berry, they were able to raise $50,000 with just the silent auction alone. SkinAgain plans to continue to support the Burn Institute, and make the gala an annual event. For more information or to donate to the Burn Institute, visit www.burninstitute.org.
