Firefighters from the San Miguel Fire District responded to a vegetation fire reported near 10130 Rothgard Road in the Spring Valley area. The suspected arson fire was reported at 12:46 PM. While kept to a half acre, the fire did threaten several structures around the hillside canyon. Also at risk was a KinderCare facility. As a precaution approximately 40 children and teachers from the childcare facility were evacuated. The fire was stopped as it moved onto the playground area.

Investigators say the fire was arson, and are currently developing suspect information. No arrests have been made.

The vegetation fire also threatened and aggravated a beehive in the nearby brush. Firefighters were forced to douse the hive with foam so they could properly attack the flames. No injuries were reported.

On one flank, the fire was stopped as it moved into a defensible space buffer created justyesterday by a resident. The combination of Firefighters working in conjunction with proactive residents who cleared weeds and brush, again helped result in no structure lossor damage.
