Santa Clara Valley Fire Associates Put New Unit Into Service
Fire Associates of Santa Clara Valley (FASCV), a volunteer group that provides canteen and rehab support during major emergency incidents, have a new support unit. Fire Support Unit 1 (FSU 1) went into service in July supporting the cities of Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Cupertino, Saratoga and Santa Clara, California out of the Santa Clara City Fire Department's Station 9, according to a news release from Fire Associates.

The 1997 GMC/Isuzu that once served as a fire/rescue truck has gone through some major modifications over the last few months. The truck now has a 60 gallon potable water tank and pump, a 5000 watt Honda generator, new UHF and VHF radios and new graphics and identification lettering. According to FASCV, other modifications and repairs include, repairs to the the interior compartment lighting, a modification to the the center console for the radios and the lightbar lenses were changed from red to amber.

In advance of use, members of FASCV moved supplies like easy up awnings, misting fans, benches, tables, coolers and coffee percolators onto FSU 1. According to FASCV, they also added numerous cases of bottled water, powdered drink mix, coffee beans and energy bars to their supply.

FASCV is a non-profit organization that has been serving fire agencies in the area since 1969. They were able to purchase this rig thanks to donations from firefighters in the area and some FASCV members. FSU 1 is one of three Fire Support Units working under the authorization of the Santa Clara County Fire Chiefs Association and is prepared to support firefighters in the North County operational area during the next multi-alarm fire.
