A fourteen-year-old boy was arrested and booked on arson charges after confessing to accidentally starting the 40-acre wildfire that threatened 50 homes in Santa Clarita, California this afternoon.

According to Los Angeles CBS2, the boy was attempting to light a pot pipe and accidentally dropped a barbecue lighter, starting the fire.

A fourteen-year-old friend tried to help him extinguish the fire, but when they were unable to put it out, they fled.  Deputies detained them after the fire, suspecting their involvement.  After the alleged perpetrator confessed to starting the fire, his friend was released.  The names of both boys were withheld due to their age.

CBS2 also reports that authorities arrested a 33-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy in a separate incident after they interfered with firefighters.  They were standing dangerously close to the fire, refusing to move and preventing helicopters from dropping water.  Firefighters had to rescue the pair, and they were subsequently arrested.

150 firefighters from multiple agencies responded to the fire, along with four water-dropping helicopters.  A voluntary evacuation of 50 homes was put in place before the fire was contained this evening.
