Santa Cruz Fire Department along with Harbor Patrol and A.M.R. ambulance responded to a report of a surfer in trouble in the water off of Woodrow at West Cliff on January 6, 2012.

Fire units arrived to find a surfer about 100 yards off the beach asking for help. Fire Department water rescue personnel entered the water and swam out to the surfer. It was determined, due to the overhead surf, to swim the victim out beyond the waves to the awaiting harbor patrol boat.

He, along with the marine rescue personnel, were transported to the harbor. The 42 year old male surfer was uninjured. He was unable to find the stairs at Mitchell's cove due to darkness and found himself in trouble. It was at that time when he started yelling for help.
