Santa Cruz Firefighters Respond to Tree Fire in Lighthouse Field
Santa Cruz Fire department responded to a tree on fire in Lighthouse field off West cliff Drive on May 31, 2011. Upon arrival crews found a small fire in the top of a very old cypress tree approximately 30 feet up.

Crews placed a ladder on the inside of the tree and were able to bring a hose line up to the top to extinguish it. The fire was located at the very top of the tree where kids had climbed and built a sitting area. Cause of the fire was most likely smoking material.

No injuries were reported. Kids were seen climbing down from the tree before the fire departments arrival.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
