Smoke Detector Saves 5 Lives in Kelso
Smoke detectors alerted a family of 5 early Tuesday morning of smoke in their home and to evacuate. Two fire engines, 2 water tankers, and a chief officer from Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue were dispatched to 107 Pacific Ave Spur at 4:16 am for a structure fire. A nearby resident reported the smoke, from across Interstate 5, to 9-11 dispatch. The first arriving engine reported medium to heavy smoke showing from the front of the house and that all occupants of the home have been evacuated; they were trying to extinguish the fire with their garden hose. Fire crews extinguished the smoldering fire within minutes. No injuries were reported and the home is still livable. The cause of the fire couldn't be determined, but fire officials are leaning towards partially lit cigarettes. Lt. Sanders explains, "We can't rule out fireworks given the date, but it appears that the furniture on the front porch could have ignited from partially lit cigarettes. There were 2 coffee cans with cigarette butts near the furniture. The important thing is that they all got out safely. Their smoke detector saved their lives. They could have easily died from smoke inhalation." The U.S. Fire Administration strongly advises that people have properly installed and maintained smoke alarms in their home, "In the event of a fire, a smoke alarm can save your life and those of your loved ones. They are a very important means of preventing house and apartment fire fatalities by providing an early warning signal so you and your family can escape. Smoke alarms are one of the best safety devices you can buy and install to protect yourself, your family, and your home. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement. Many fatal fires begin late at night or in the early morning. For extra safety, install smoke alarms both inside and outside sleeping areas. Since smoke and many deadly gases rise, installing your smoke alarms at the proper level will provide you with the earliest warning possible. Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions." This information and more on different types of smoke alarms and proper installation can be found at the U.S. Fire Administration website: http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/citizens/home_fire_prev/alarms/.
