Spring Valley Fire Damages One Home, Threatens Others
A brush fire in Spring Valley, California Saturday afternoon forced more than 150 people to be evacuated from their homes. The fire was reported just after 12:30 p.m. burning in terrain heavy with flash fuels, Leonard Villarreal, a spokesman for the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District said in a news release. Approximately 90 firefighters from San Miguel, CAL FIRE and Heartland fire agencies responded to the blaze that began near the intersection of Jamacha Boulevard and Sweetwater Springs Boulevard. According to Villarreal, ground crews were assisted by two fixed wing aircraft and two helicopters. Evacuations were ordered fro the Lamplighter Village mobile home park and residents of the Carriage Hills neighborhood. The fire burned within 30 yards of some homes with one ember landing on a wood shake roof, causing an estimated $60,000 in damage to that home, according to Villarreal. "Much has been made about this summer being the coolest in about 70 years, however despite the cooler weather, wildfires start and travel quickly. In San Diego County we must be prepared year round for the possibility of a destructive brush fire," Villarreal said. Fire crews were assisted by San Diego Fish and Wildlife, the California Highway Patrol, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office and the San Diego Chapter of the American Red Cross. The fire burned an estimated 50 to 60 acres and was officially contained at 3:22 p.m. There were no injuries reported in the fire that remains under investigation.
