Tip Leads Portland Fire Inspectors to Seize Shipment of Illegal Fireworks

Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R), in partnership with the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office, acted on a tip Tuesday, May 24, 2011 that a shipment of possibly illegal fireworks had been brought into Portland.  

At 11:30 am on May 24th, PF&R Hazmat Specialist Bob Happel received information from the State Fire Marshal's Office that a shipping company contacted their office to verify whether a shipper and intended receiver of a fireworks shipment was registered with the State.

"It turns out that neither the shipper nor receiver was registered with the State of Oregon as required to move fireworks through Oregon," said Portland Fire Marshal Erin Janssens.  

That afternoon, PF&R Investigators - along with representatives from the State Fire Marshal's Office - investigated and seized approximately $500 of illegal fireworks. The fireworks were inventoried, photographed, and transferred to the State for proper disposal.  The shipment was wrapped and appropriately labeled with an orange placard - 1.4 Explosives and destined for an address in Mosier, Oregon. The State Fire Marshal's Office is continuing to investigate.

Portland Fire & Rescue wants to remind people that fireworks not purchased from an approved vendor in Oregon are most likely illegal. Why? Every year, fireworks are a source of injuries and anxiety to people and pets, and have a significant detrimental impact to the economy and environment through needless medical expenses, property loss, and pollution.   

In Portland, violators will face fines up to $1000.00 for possession of illegal fireworks, and can be held criminally liable for any damages to persons or property.
