Tour of Duty Travels To Chicago and Emmitsburg
The Tour of Duty run arrived in Emmitsburg, Maryland early Monday morning. Thirty six firefighters and police officers from Australia and the United States have been running since August 12, 2010 to honor the 411 emergency service workers who perished at the World Trade Center nine years ago and to raise money for several fire service charities, including the Tribute WTC Visitor Center, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, among others. The men and women left the Santa Monica Pier in California almost a month ago, and will arrive in New York City on September 11, 2010. The 4,600 mile run has taken them through several cities where they have been greeted with love and support. Watch this video shot of the runners as they arrived in Chicago, Illinois on September 3, 2010. Despite inclement weather, the men and women ran that leg of the route with determination, and were overwhelmed with the support shown to them by the Chicago Fire Department and members of the Chicago community. While in Emmitsburg, the Tour of Duty runners were given a tour of the National Emergency Training Center campus and participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. They are expected to arrive in Washington DC today. For more information about the Tour of Duty run, along with donation information, visit the Tour of Duty Website.
