Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a townhouse fire, January, 2, 2012, at approximately 6:40 p.m., in the Annandale area of Fairfax County. The single-family townhouse is located at 4809 Backlick Road.

Firefighters saw smoke and fire coming from two basement windows on the ground level from the middle, three-story townhouse upon arrival. Fire was quickly spreading throughout the basement and moving upward. Firefighters conducted an aggressive offensive fire attack, while other crews performed a primary search for occupants. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 10 minutes, confining most of the property damage to the basement and first floor.

There was moderate smoke and water damage to the second and third floors. Firefighters conducted extensive overhaul and salvage operations due to possible fire extension in connecting townhomes. Four adults and three children have been displaced. There were no injuries. Red Cross is assisting the occupants.

Damage is estimated at $155,000. According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A child experimenting with a lighter caused the fire.
