The Rock Bottom Brewery in La Jolla, California recently hosted its 14th Annual Firefighter Auction to raise money for the UCSD Burn Center, which provides treatment and support for burn victims, both civilians and firefighters.

This year hundreds of ladies gathered to bid on the 23 participating firefighters, most of whom are in their first year of firefighting.  One of these men was Thomas Huygens, a "Probie" with San Diego Fire-Rescue.

A last minute entry into the auction, Huygens was excited about being involved, saying, "I decided at 4:30 today and had to be here at 5:15.  So I decided to do it just to help.  It is for the Burn Institute, so this is for a good cause.  I am all about having a good time, so this is fun.  I've never had a career where I've had these opportunities, so I'm all about it."

Huygens' plan for the winning bidder was to cook dinner for her at home and take her out dancing afterwards.

According to Shelley Sakover, the Special Events Coordinator for Rock Bottom Brewery, all of the winning bidders and participating firefighters are individually each given $50 gift certificates.  The restaurant will honor the certificates at any time, whether they are used on the date or not.  Sakover says the restaurant provides the winning women with the firefighters' contact information, and it is up to the couples to coordinate the dates.

Thomas Huygens was ultimately auctioned off for a record bid of $270.  The woman who won him, Mandy Davey, said, "I think he's very nice.  I mean they are all very nice, all good people doing a great job, so why not?  And it's all for charity as well."  Davey won dates with Huygens and another firefighter.

In addition to the auction, several companies such as Birch Aquarium, the San Diego Zoo, and Sea World donated prizes to help raise money for the charity.  The San Diego Chargers also donated a signed football.  In total, the event raised over $10,000 for the UCSD Burn Center.
