US Forest Service Conducts Controlled Burn on Palomar Mountain

UPDATE 10:55 am:

The US Forest Service has cancelled the controlled burn due to inclement weather.  Information about rescheduling the burn will be released as soon as it is available.


The United States Forest Service will be conducting a controlled burn January 18-19, 2011 in San Diego County, California.  The burn will take place near the intersections of Palomar Divide Truck Trail and Halfway Road, placing it on a Northeast/East aspect of Palomar Mountain.

According to a news release, fire crews anticipate burning approximately 200 acres beginning at 9:00 a.m. on January 18th.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
